Marinas and Departure Points
Where charters can start around the North Sound and the west coast, and how your departure point is confirmed.

Villa and private residence stays
A villa gives you space, privacy and your own rhythm, and a private charter carries that feeling onto the water. Here is how to plan one from a rental home anywhere on Grand Cayman, from canal-side houses off the North Sound to the quieter south and east coasts.
Why it works
People choose a villa for the same reasons they choose a private charter: privacy, space and the freedom to run the day their own way. There is no breakfast sitting to work around and no strangers at the next table, and a yacht booked for your group alone carries that feeling out onto the water.
It suits the groups villas tend to attract: several generations under one roof, two or three families traveling together, or friends marking an occasion. On your own boat, grandparents can stay in the shade while the children swim, a toddler can rest out of the sun, and nobody has to fit around other passengers.
Villa groups also tend to decide together, which keeps a charter simple to organize: one request, one quote and one plan that everyone can see before the day.

Everyone on board is someone you invited. Popular stops such as Stingray City are shared public marine parks, but the vessel itself is yours for the charter.
Start time, charter length and the shape of the day are agreed in advance and confirmed in your quote, with the captain making the final call on weather and safety.
Shade, a cool interior, a restroom and easy water access matter more when ages range from toddlers to grandparents. We confirm those details for the vessel offered.
Location and logistics
Grand Cayman is about 22 miles long, and by road you travel around the North Sound rather than across it. Where your villa sits makes a real difference to how you reach the boat.
| Where you are staying | What the area is like | What it can mean for your charter |
|---|---|---|
| Canal homes off the North Sound | Many waterfront homes sit on canals that open onto the North Sound, a shallow, reef-protected lagoon of roughly 35 square miles and the island's main boating area. | You may be relatively close to where North Sound boat trips begin. If the home has a dock, ask us about it, but a dock pickup is only possible once it has been checked and confirmed. |
| Beachfront homes near Rum Point and Cayman Kai | A quieter, residential stretch of the north coast, with calm, shallow water at Rum Point and the secluded beaches of Cayman Kai at the island's northern tip. | Visit Cayman puts Rum Point about 45 minutes by car from most hotels and the cruise terminal, so a departure on the western side of the Sound can mean a long drive each way. There are marinas on this side too, including Kaibo Marina at Cayman Kai; whether a vessel can start nearer to you is confirmed in your quote. |
| The south coast and East End | Quieter districts with a more local feel, away from the busy west coast and its resort corridor. | Homes here are usually farther from North Sound departure points. Leave generous time for the transfer, and tell us where you are staying so we can factor the journey into the options we suggest. |
| Seven Mile Beach and the west coast | Villas and condominiums along the island's resort corridor between George Town and West Bay, close to Seven Mile Beach. | The western shore of the North Sound is close by, with marinas such as the Cayman Islands Yacht Club at Governors Creek and the harbor at Camana Bay. The exact departure point for your vessel is confirmed in your quote. |
Unless your quote says otherwise, plan on making your own way to the boat. Many villa guests rent a car (Grand Cayman drives on the left); others take a taxi or ask their villa manager to arrange a driver. Transfers are arranged separately from the charter unless they are confirmed in your quote.
We do not guess at drive times. Once the departure point is confirmed, check the route for the time of day you will travel and leave a margin for traffic and parking, particularly with young children, beach bags or older relatives in the car.
If you are staying on the north or east side, it is worth asking whether a vessel suited to your plans can start closer to you. Sometimes it can and sometimes it cannot, and your quote will say which. Our guide to Grand Cayman marinas and departure points explains where charters can start.

Private docks
Short answer: sometimes, but only once it is confirmed. Whether a yacht can call at a private dock depends on the water depth, the dock itself, the owner's or property manager's permission and the rules that apply on that stretch of water. We never promise a dock pickup before those points have been checked with the operator.
A dock that suits a homeowner's own small boat is not always suitable for a larger charter yacht. Depth along the canal and at the dock face matters most, because bigger vessels draw more water. The Port Authority lists some of the North Sound's marked channels at only five to nine feet deep, and depths along private canals vary.
The operator will want to know:

Many villa stays come with a property manager, a concierge or a travel planner who looks after arrangements for guests. They are welcome to request a charter on your behalf, and it often makes things smoother, especially when they know the house, its dock and the group.
To quote accurately we still need the essentials: the dates, how many people are coming and their ages, the villa's general area, and what the group hopes to do. We send the quote to whoever made the request, and we ask that the guest who will be on board sees the confirmed details, from the departure point to the inclusions, before anything is booked.
If there are several decision-makers in the house, agree who will approve the plan and who will pay. It saves a round of messages when dates are in demand.
Dates, group size and ages, the villa area, dock details if relevant and the kind of day the guests have in mind.
We look at what suits the group for those dates and confirm availability, specifications, guest capacity, inclusions and pricing.
The quote sets out the departure point, timing and any arrangements, so the guest knows exactly what to expect.
Food, drink and occasions
A well-stocked villa kitchen, a favorite caterer or a private chef can all be part of a charter day, but only within the vessel's policy. Some operators arrange food and drinks, some welcome guests bringing their own, and some restrict outside catering or particular items. We confirm what applies to the vessel offered before you book.
If you have a chef in residence and would like them aboard, mention it in your request. A chef counts toward the guest numbers confirmed for the vessel, and use of the galley is up to the operator.
Birthdays, anniversaries and family milestones fit naturally into villa holidays. Cakes, flowers, decorations and particular drinks can be requested, but none is assumed: anything arranged is listed in your quote. Our celebration charter guide has more ideas.

Timing your stay
On a week-long villa holiday, the charter is often the day everyone remembers, so give it room. Avoid arrival and departure days, when flights, luggage and check-in times compete for attention, and try not to schedule it for the morning after a late celebration.
Booking earlier in the stay leaves space to move the charter if the weather is unsuitable. Winter cold fronts, known locally as Nor'westers, can bring rough seas to the west and north coasts and affect the North Sound, roughly from late October to early April, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. The captain always decides whether conditions are safe.
If you are flexible, give us two or three possible dates. It makes availability easier to match and gives everyone a fallback. The charter planning guide covers seasons and timing in more detail.

Questions and answers
Docks, distances, chefs, managers and the other details villa guests ask about most.
Possibly, but never by default. It depends on the depth at the dock and along the approach, the size and condition of the dock, permission from the owner or property manager, and any rules that apply on that waterway. Send us the details and we will check with the operator. If a dock pickup is confirmed, it is written into your quote; otherwise you meet the yacht at the departure point the quote names.
Clear photos of the dock and the water around it, its approximate length and height above the water, any depth information the owner has, and the route from the canal entrance. Please also tell us who owns or manages the property and confirm they are happy for a charter vessel to come alongside. The operator decides whether the dock is suitable.
That depends on where the vessel offered departs from, which we confirm in your quote before you book. By road you travel around the North Sound rather than across it, so journeys from the east and north often take longer than visitors expect. Visit Cayman puts Rum Point about 45 minutes by car from most hotels and the cruise terminal. If a departure closer to you is possible for a suitable vessel, we will tell you.
It depends on the vessel's policy. Some operators welcome guests bringing their own food and drinks, some prefer to arrange catering themselves, and some restrict particular items. A chef also counts toward the guest numbers confirmed for the vessel. Tell us your plans and we will confirm what is allowed before you book.
Yes. Managers, concierges and travel planners are welcome to send the request and receive the quote. We still need accurate dates, group numbers and ages, and we ask that the guest sees the confirmed details, including departure point, timing and inclusions, before the booking goes ahead.
Guest capacity is confirmed per vessel, so tell us the exact number, including children. Depending on availability, the options may include a larger vessel, two vessels on the same day or splitting the group across different days. If you would like two boats to travel together, ask about it specifically, since each captain makes their own decisions on routes and conditions.
Avoid arrival and departure days, and book earlier in the week rather than later, so there is room to move the charter if the weather is unsuitable. Sharing two or three possible dates also makes availability easier to match.
Please ask before you plan on it. Pet policies are set by each vessel and operator, and some do not allow animals at all. If a pet is allowed, think about heat, shade, fresh water and how they will get on and off the boat, because a charter day can include long spells in full sun.
Often, yes, with the right vessel and some planning. Tell us everyone's ages and any mobility needs so we can confirm properly sized life jackets, including for infants, and ask the operator about boarding, shade and restroom facilities. Our family charter guide covers planning for different ages.
We cannot tell without checking. Depth varies between canals and along their length, and larger yachts need more water under the hull. For context, the Port Authority lists some marked North Sound channels at only five to nine feet. The operator looks at the vessel's draft and the route before agreeing to any dock pickup.
Payment arrangements, including timing and any deposit, are set out in your quote. If a villa manager is making the booking, agree in advance who will pay so the confirmation goes to the right person.
Sometimes. Last-minute requests depend entirely on what is available for the date, and popular periods can fill up. Call us on +1 305-515-4735 or send a request with your flexibility and we will tell you what is possible.
